How many times have you said "I just need to do _____. I don't know what's stopping me." Whether it's going to the gym, calling the doctor, getting that paper done, or emailing someone you've been meaning to email back, it's all the same. You have plans and goals that you don't follow through with...and you don't know why.
You say you want something but yet you don't follow through. Why? What's stopping you is your mind. If you can't imagine it, the goal won't happen. Without even realizing it, you encounter barriers, like a wall, stopping you from achieving what you want to do. Start by asking yourself, "Can I see myself ______ ?"
Can you really see yourself waking up at 5:30am to put on your workout clothes and go to the gym? Just to realize how out of shape you are and possibly feel worse about yourself. Be honest. If you've been getting up at 8am, rolling out of bed, half asleep, and almost late for work...you probably won't be doing a 6am bootcamp class at the gym.
You have to see and accept where you are right now before moving forward. Do you know what the barriers are to achieving your goal? Can you see yourself breaking down all those barriers? Do you feel ready to make the change?
So once you feel ready to start to make a change:
1. Break down the overall goal into a smaller one - even if it's so small, you think it's ridiculous. Do one thing.
-- For example, if your overall goal is to go the gym 5x a week...imagine yourself going one time. And make it simple, do-able. Don't force multiple changes but instead set yourself up for success!
2. Then visualize yourself doing that one small thing. Can you see it happening? How will you set yourself up for succeeding the small goal? What will you be doing at the gym? What are you wearing? Will you go to a class or do something on your own? Will you be listening to music? What are the sights around you? What are the sounds/smells? What might be going on in your head while you're doing it? How will you feel afterwards?
-- As you're doing this, notice any anxiety that comes up. Are you comparing yourself to others? Are you worried about other people's view of you? Are you judging yourself for where you are? Notice the judgment/resistance/anxiety/fears.
The negative critic might be saying: "This is not good enough." "I'm so fat." "If I wasn't so lazy, I'd be at my goal by now." "People are judging me." "I need to do more. This is awful." "I can't believe how out of shape I am."
Remember to accept where you are and invite some positive mantras. Maybe you can see it this way:
"This is one step towards my goal." "This step matters." "I want to feel good about myself." "I can get through this one workout." "This will help me feel better." "I believe in myself today, right now." "I can do it."
